Invasion vs. Defense

Why I choose to do a comic for my Creative Piece

For my creative piece, I created a comic titled “Invasion vs. Defense” to show how pathogenic bacteria interact with the human immune system. I choose a comic format mainly because i read a lot of comics and reading a story about such a topic would be much more enjoyable and engaging than to read a few paragraphs containing the material. The comic starts with bacteria entering the body through a cut in the skin, which acts as a portal of entry. From there, it shows the bacteria growing and multiplying inside the body, connecting to what we learned about microbial growth and reproduction. By presenting it step-by-step, i wanted to show how an infection actually starts and develops over time.

This project connects to several important topics we covered in class, including microbial structure, metabolism, and pathogenicity. For example, I included details like the peptidoglycan cell wall, which helps protect bacteria and allows them to survive in different environments. I also showed how bacteria release exotoxins, especially cytolytic toxins, which damage host cells and increase how harmful the pathogen is. These parts of the comic highlight how bacteria are able to invade the body and cause damage. I also connected this to metabolism by showing how bacteria rapidly multiply, using enzymes and ATP to support their growth and activity.

And last but not the least, the comic also focuses on how the body responds to infection. I showed infected cells releasing cytokines, which act as signals that call immune cells like white blood cells and macrophages to the site of infection. This represents the body’s innate immune response and how it works to fight off harmful microbes. In the final panels, the immune system successfully eliminates the bacteria, and the body begins to recover, entering the convalescence stage. Overall, creating this comic helped me bring together different topics like infection, immunity, and disease progression into one clear and connected process, which made the material easier to understand and remember. As someone who loves reading comics, making this comic was really a fun experience.
